Time travel, ray guns, jet packs, air ship pirates and everything steam-powered. All this, and more, are found in the futuristic and fantastical world of steampunk.

Inspired by the literary works of Jules Verne (Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea) and H.G. Wells (The War of the Worlds), steampunk incorporates elements of science fiction, speculative fiction, fantasy, and alternative history. It goes beyond literature, though, influencing a style of clothing, video games, movies and the like.

The Steampunk: Gadgets-Art-Costumes exhibit is on display at the Oshkosh Public Museum this summer, the only museum in the Midwest to be hosting an exhibit dedicated to this exotic subculture. The exhibit features unique gadgets, stunning artwork and elaborate costumes created by steampunk artists and fans, as well as a variety of museum artifacts for historical comparison. When visiting, be sure to stop in the Tesla Lounge and take your picture in the Nemo Salon.
