I reported last February that images of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman wearing what looked like Victorian clothing had been released to the public. I speculated that it was a scene from an episode in the new series. However, Steven Moffat who co-created the series with Mark Gatiss who plays Mycroft Holmes – Sherlock’s brother – has confirmed that there will be a special one-off episode that will see our heroes in a Victorian London setting.Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Moffat confirmed that Holmes and Watson will be solving crimes in Victorian London.

In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly before a panel at SXSW, Moffat said “The special is its own thing, we wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special. It’s not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it – as we could hardly conceal – it’s Victorian. Mark and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be separate entity on its own. It’s kind of in its own little bubble.”

It certainly sounds exciting and with the production pretty much finished, we hopefully won’t have to wait until Christmas to see it. However, no air date has been set as yet.
