The original Czech title for The Fabulous World of Jules Verne was Vynález zkázy, which translates to “The Deadly Invention.” This film mostly draws its story from Verne’s 1896 novel, Facing the Flag. When it was released between 1958 and 1959 across 72 countries, it was considered the most successful film in Czechoslovokia’s filmmaking history. Don’t fret if your Czech is rusty, the movie is in English.

Hi Phoebe.
Miss Plumtartt and I just watched this film. Oh my Goodness! We were not expecting that! That was a film made with love. There were hundreds and hundreds of scenes and shots. Every single one of them was lovingly created. The style of film reminded us of ‘The Spirit’, or, ‘300’, but those movies were not so lavishly built as this masterpiece. Why is this movie not more famous? Thank you for sharing!
Your pal,
~Icky. 🙂
I’m glad you enjoyed it! According to the research I did, a lot of the scenes were recreations of original illustrations of Verne’s works 🙂
