The Future can be a confusing part of steampunk. Not everyone realises what an integral part of the culture it is. We all know that science fiction is one of the foundations, but still people argue that steampunk ends at the World Wars. If that’s the case, then there can be no future for steampunk. I don’t mean that literally, I mean there can be no steampunks from or in the future. Obviously science fiction doesn’t just mean the future, however this part of time is largely ignored. Chronology of a steampunk universe – The Present

Considering the fact that we’re submerged in a culture that hasn’t moved past design of the 19th century, incorporating the present day into steampunk is both challenging and inventive. One of my favourite parts of steampunk is taking something completely modern and giving it a design that looks like it was made over 100 years ago.
