Should I worry about steampunk?

Is it wrong that I worry about the integrity of steampunk? I know I’m relatively new to the community and I hold no authority on what is right or wrong. No-one does, really. So why am I worried that the New York Post have ran an article on a steampunk book? The book looks very good. As steampunk becomes more and more popular in everyday culture, people will jump on the band wagon, releasing steampunk products which are of an inferior quality/look but will inevitably be more successful due to aggressive marketing. To that end, should steampunk introduce certain rules to maintain the fundamental elements that we consider so important? What rules should they be? I had the pleasure of attending the Haworth steampunk festival this weekend. It was wonderful to get out of my stuffy office and get to meet some of you. The drive into Haworth is a mixture of tedium and delight.
